Checkouts Overview

Learn how stores and checkouts work together and choose the right checkout type for your integration.

FastSpring checkouts let you present and sell your products using a fully hosted, secure buying experience. Each store can contain multiple checkouts, each with its own configuration, styling, and integrations. You can use different checkouts for different audiences, products, or workflows.

The sections below introduce store-level concepts, explain the available checkout types, and help you understand how checkouts fit into your store.Select a section or use the TOC on the right to jump ahead.

Store vs checkout

Understand how store-level settings and checkout-level settings work together.

Your store defines shared configuration across all checkouts, including products, offers, promotions, email templates, and localization defaults. Some sellers maintain multiple stores to separate different business needs, such as:

  • B2B and B2C product lines
  • Distinct pricing or offer structures for different customer segments
  • Different access rights for internal teams

FastSpring Support can enable additional stores in your account if needed.

Each store can contain multiple checkouts. Checkouts are the customer-facing interfaces buyers use to complete purchases, request quotes, or manage transactions. Checkouts can differ in:

  • Layout (web, popup, or embedded)
  • Styling and branding
  • Localization and fields
  • Payment behaviors
  • Cart and session settings

This allows you to tailor different checkout experiences for different audiences, product lines, or use cases.

Checkout types

FastSpring supports three checkout types. Each offers the same secure buying experience but provides different integration options.

Use the options below to choose the best checkout type for your integration.

Default checkout

Your store includes a single default checkout, which controls the appearance and styling of the customer Account Management site. This site enables customers to view their order history and invoices, manage their subscriptions, and make purchases.

Key details:

  • The default checkout must be a web checkout.
  • Popup and embedded checkouts cannot serve as the default.
  • Your default checkout must be online for Account Management styling to apply.
