Customize a subscription
Learn how to customize your subscription.
Use this guide to modify any existing subscription record in your catalog. You'll update areas such as Overview, Pricing, Discount, Fulfillment, Notifications & Retention, Add-Ons & Related Offers, Advanced, and Manage Subscription actions. Once you save your changes, your subscription will reflect the new details live in your store.
Quick start
- Sign in to the FastSpring app.
- Go to Catalog > Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription you want to customize. The details page opens, displaying every section you can edit.
Review the guided steps in each section below to make your subscription updates. If you need to create a new subscription first, see Create a subscription.
Overview section
In the Overview section:
- Click Edit. The Edit Overview modal opens.
- Click Choose File to upload an icon image for your subscription.
Supported formats: PNG, JPG, JPEG, GIF (max 1 MB). - Update Display name to change the customer-facing subscription name.
- Edit Summary to add or refine a brief subscription description.
- Click Save.
Note:Icons for web checkouts can be up to 256 × 256 px. Popup checkouts support up to 46 × 46 px. Files outside those dimensions will be resized automatically.
Pricing section
Adjust the pricing and rebill settings of the subscription.
In the Pricing section:
- Click Edit. The Edit Subscription Pricing modal opens.
- Under Subscription Type, choose:
- Standard for automatic rebills on a fixed schedule.
- Managed to trigger each rebill manually via the app or API.
If you chose a Standard subscription, configure your rebill settings:

From the Billing Cycle dropdown, select the frequency of rebills.

(Optional) In the Trial field, enter a number of days for a free or paid trial period.

Under Trial Price, choose Free trial or Paid trial.
Paid trials require you to enter a trial price in your base currency (and any additional currencies). -
Under Length, choose how many times the customer is billed:
- Rebill indefinitely
The subscription continues until cancelled. - Rebill for [ __ ] period(s), then:
- Deactivate subscription
The subscription ends after the specified rebill period. - Renew into another subscription
A Renews into field appears. Start typing to search by subscription name or path.
- Start new term
(only available if enabled in your settings)
- Deactivate subscription
- Rebill indefinitely

Enter the Price of your subscription in your store's default currency.
Currencies set to Auto will automatically be converted at checkout using the base price and current exchange rate.

(Optional) Check Collect a one-time setup fee to collect a one-time charge for setting up the subscription. Fill in a label (customer-facing) and price for the fee.
This fee shows as its own line item on the first purchase only. Future rebills aren't charged again.

Configure Default Quantity by selecting one of the radio options:
- Editable: Customers can change the quantity at checkout.
- Locked: Quantity is fixed and cannot be adjusted.
- Hidden: Quantity selector is not shown, and the default quantity is always applied.

Click Save.
Discount section
In the Discount section:
- Click Edit. The Edit Discount modal opens.
- Under Discounted Price, choose Standard or Volume.
- Standard applies the same discount regardless of quantity.
- Volume allows you to configure tiered discounts based on quantity.
- From the price-type dropdown, select Percent Off or Amount Off, then enter a value.
- (Optional) To limit this discount by date:
- Select Limit discount availability by dates (UTC Time).
- Enter a Start and End date.
If left unchecked, the discount will be valid indefinitely.
- (Optional) Enter a Discount Reason (up to 255 characters) to show a message during checkout.
- Click Save.
Fulfillment section
Configure a license key, product download, or other digital tool to send customers your subscription. For more information, see Fulfillments.
In the Fulfillment section:
- From the Product Format dropdown, select the most appropriate product format:
- Digital Product: Perpetual-license software or one-time transactions with no physical item.
- Digital Product and Shipment: Perpetual-license products that also include a physical component you will ship (e.g., boxed software).
- Physical Shipment: Physical goods that you fulfill by shipping directly to the customer.
- Software as a Service: Products you provide as a service (e.g., web applications).
- Click + Add Fulfillment. The Add Fulfillment Action page appears.
- Select the type of fulfillment you want:
- Send Email / Show Web Notification: Email the customer and optionally display details in the web receipt. Information from other fulfillment actions may be included, such as file URLs or licenses.
- Generate a License: Generate and deliver a license key via hosted JavaScript, PHP, supported third-party library, or remote server URL.
- Provide a File Download: Securely distribute a file download (max 250 MB) for a limited time.
- Create a Signed PDF: Stamp a PDF with customer and order info on download (max 250 MB).
- Click Next.
- Fill in the configuration details for your chosen method (e.g. upload files, point to your license-key service, or edit your email template).
- Click Save to add this fulfillment action to your product.
Notifications & Retention
Configure email notifications that FastSpring sends to your customer. For subscriptions, we recommend enabling payment reminders, as these reduce the occurrence of disputes and chargebacks.
In the Notifications & Retention section:
- Click Edit. The Edit Subscription Notifications & Retention modal opens.
- Select the Send payment reminder checkbox to send pre-billing reminders to your customers. Enter the amount of time in advance that you would like to send the reminder. Click + Add Reminder to configure an additional payment reminder.
- Select the Send payment overdue notification checkbox to send an email to the customer when their rebill fails, or they did not enter payment information on time.
- Enter the amount of time following the failed rebill that you would like to send the notification.
- Enter the number of times you would like to send the reminder before canceling the subscription.
- In the Cancellation section, enter the amount of time that the subscription will remain active from the date of the failed payment. If you select Send payment overdue notification, enter the amount of time following the date of the last payment overdue notification.
- Select the Pause checkbox to offer customers the option to pause their subscription for up to 10 billing cycles instead of cancelling.
- Click Save.
Add-Ons & Related Offers section
Set up promotional offers that appear when a customer adds the subscription to their cart. Promotional offers include the following options:
- Subscription Add-Ons: Combine non-subscription items to your subscription. This will affect the total of each rebill.
- Product Offer: Present additional options for customers to select at checkout. These options will affect the total of the initial purchase. However, they do not affect rebills.
- Product Options: Offer cross-sells and upsells to customers at checkout to advertise related products.
Advanced section
Customize advanced checkout options for the subscription.
In the Advanced section:
Note: All settings in this section are optional. Only configure the ones you need.

Rank | Numeric priority (1-10000) that orders products ascending; lower numbers appear first. |
Product SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) | Unique internal code for inventory tracking and reporting. |
Long Description | Expanded product details shown in a pop-up when users click or hover the product name. |
Call-to-Action | Custom text for the purchase button on product and catalog pages. |
Post-Purchase Instructions | Markdown-formatted message displayed to customers immediately after checkout. |
Extended Download Service | Option to extend the time customers can download purchased files beyond the standard window. |
Manage Subscription menu
In the FastSpring app, open the Manage Subscription dropdown in the top-right corner and choose one of the following actions:

Tax Code | Assign or update the product's tax category. Use the Tax Category Selection Helper for guidance. |
Quotable | Toggle On to allow customers to add this product to quotes; toggle Off to prevent it from being added. |
Status | Set to Public to display the product in your store or Private to hide it. |
Custom Attributes | Define custom key-value pairs to store additional product metadata. |
Create Variation | Open the variation modal to create or edit product variations. See Create a product variation. |
Preview Prices | Open the Preview Prices modal to preview how your pricing and settings appear to customers. |
Copy Product | Duplicate this product and all its settings. See Copy an existing product. |
Delete | Permanently remove this product. This action cannot be undone. |
